Storage for Retirement

As you approach or move past retirement age you have some decisions and plans to make. You may see no reason to downsize your home or relocate to a retirement village straight away. Other factors such as health, empty nesting or financial concerns may prompt such a move sooner rather than later. If you do need to make decisions, the sooner you make them and start to implement your plans the easier it will be.

Here’s a list of items to consider when moving into a retirement village, relocating or downsizing. Not all of these points involve storage space, but, many of them can be simplified if choosing self storage as an option.

1 - Downsizing

Decide which belongings to take to the retirement village and which to store or donate, especially if moving to a smaller space. Be ruthless, if you haven't used somthing for years, give it to a friend or donate it.

2 - Furniture

Determining whether current furniture will fit in the new space, and if not, whether self-storage is needed for items with sentimental or long-term value. Self storage is always much cheaper than getting the rmoval company to store your items longe term.

3 - Storage Space in the Village

Check if the retirement village provides enough built-in storage (e.g., closets or external storage units) for personal belongings.

4 - Sentimental Items

Deciding what to do with sentimental possessions that may not fit in the new home but aren't ready to be discarded, making self-storage a useful option.

It's not unusual today for homes to have much less storage than in the past. It could be that you are moving into a smaller home or apartment. Trying to fit all of your treasured possessions into the new space just isn't going to work.

5 - Hobbies and Equipment

If hobbies require equipment (e.g., sports gear, tools, or crafting materials), consider if there’s space for them at the village or whether a storage unit is needed. This may be the case if your hobbies are seasonal and your don't require the gear all year around.

6 - Family Heirlooms

Planning whether to pass down or temporarily store family heirlooms, especially if there isn’t room in the new living space. (See point 12).

7 - Transition Period

If the move to the retirement village is gradual, self-storage might be needed for short-term use to manage the logistics of transitioning.

8 - Location

If you are moving to a different town, city or country, you may need to store some or all of your belongings until you can have them relocated or sold.

9 - Future Plans

Considering if the move is permanent or temporary; self-storage could be helpful if there’s a chance of returning to a larger home later. You may decide that retirement living is not for you and decide to move into another home or back with family. Storage gives you this option!

10 - Costs

Evaluating the cost of self-storage in relation to the overall budget for the move, including monthly fees and insurance for stored items. Our knowledgeable staff are able to help you work out these costs.

11 - Accessibility

Ensuring the self-storage facility is close enough for easy access to stored items if needed frequently, or if family members can assist in retrieval. Or facilities feature drive in access, great for removal trucks and keeping your belongings dry on moving day. We have cargo lifts and a variety of trolleys along with loan trailers to simplify your move.

12 - Storage Environment

Considering whether certain items, such as artwork, antiques, or documents, require storing in your new dwelling or choosing a storage unit in the appropriate area of a facility, if you choose to rent storage. Or staff can help with this.

13 - Emotional Impact

Balancing the emotional aspect of letting go of possessions with the practical needs of the new living situation, while using self-storage as a way to ease the transition.

From our experience with moving and relocating at this time of your life, considering these factors help ensure a smooth move and thoughtful handling of personal belongings. Meaning less chance of your property becoming damaged or lost.
